RE: Consumer Protection Abuses/Loopholes
Dear [Rep. or Sen. Name of legislator]:
I am a constituent of yours and am writing about consumer protection abuses due to loopholes in present state statute. To wit: New motorcycles purchases are not given the same protection under the Monroney Stick Requirements as are autos and trucks. The loophole is classifying motorcycles as “recreational” vehicles. I personally believe recreational vehicle should have the same protection, but either way motorcycles cannot be lumped solely into this category. They are legal legitimate transportation. MSRP should be listed on all new vehicles irregardless of having recreational status or not. This is why consumer protection laws exist; otherwise unscrupulous merchants would take great advantage of consumers.
I have also become aware of dealers adding on a charge called “Dealer Service Charge.” This is not a proper charge.
I am asking you to take action on two matters:
1.To have the loophole removed from the Monroney requirements and extended to at least Motorcycles, if not all recreational vehicles like RV’s and boats. The sticker with MSRP and all charges should be listed on all new vehicles.
2.Dealers should not be charging a “Dealer Service Charge.” This is nothing more then subterfuge covering what should be listed as a second ADM, Additional Dealer Markup. Dealers are playing a shell game with consumers being victimized and the Legislature must better rein in greedy dealers.
I would appreciate your help in having the appropriate legislation enacted.
Yours truly,
